Spiral flute pipe taps are recommended for use in soft and stringy materials where chips packing in the flutes are an issue. The high hook design coupled with the helical flutes lift long stringy chips out of the tapped hole.
Taper pipe taps are engaged in the work for the thread depth. Spiral flutes lift chips and the high shear angle is effective cutting ductile and stringy material. This style work well in those instances where chip packing disrupts the thread quality when using a straight flute tap.
