Chipless Tapping Of Internal Threads

Internal threads can be generated by using non-cutting taps called forming taps.These tools push or form the material to the shape of threads. The problems associated with chip congestion and removals are eliminated, particularly in blind holes. Additional benefits include stronger threads, longer tap life and infrequent breakage, all contributing to a lower cost per hole tapped.

Form taps have the same shank and length dimensions as conventional taps, but they have no cutting edges. Form taps only have lubrication grooves to allow coolant to access the area where the pressure is applied.  In order to  produce  threads that meet the required dimensions, the hole size before tapping is larger and the recommended “H” limit is higher.

Depending on the part produced, a threaded insert of a tougher material is applied. With today’s designs and coatings available, this style is frequently used in mild steel and 300 series stainless steel.
